You still don't need to cry about not being able to retrofit either of your old piles. You should be glad you even have a yellow 1973 F250 390 FE Engine, 4 Speed Manual Tranny, D60 Rear with a 200SA Lincoln Welder, Oxy/Acetylene Rig, Toolbox, Headache Rack with rollups, Fab Table with vise and modified tailgate for additional work table. I can't even get a permit for one here in Allen.
How would you flash the 1973 F250? The old fashioned way? With a trench coat, birkenstock sandals and black knee-high wool socks? This is too terrible to discuss in this forum!
The only repercussions of having the FX5 would be the addition of Truck Nutz. Then, unfortunately, some political-correct institute of great minds trying to perserve the white man's way, would see the 5th wheel as some sex-based appendage... (For an instance, see pic above...)
I was planning to get a 2006 F150 FX5 to replace my 97 150, but having heard about the problems with the prototypes that you have discussed above - I have decided to get an F350 with the TURD-free running gear. I don't know if any of you have read the recently released bulletins, but it seems that when running an FX5 in the "Inverted Mode", it doesn't meet EPA, Air Bureau, FERC, USFS, and Kyoto Protocol emissions requirements.
It seems that the negative pressure valve seals leak due to problems with the Ford Inverted Bearing (FIB) lube oil system. These FIBs, and there many of them, allow the piston thrust to be taken up by the top half of the main bearings, as opposed to the bottom half when run in conventional operation. After I heard about this problem, I knew that I didn't want to get an FX5 - maybe I will wait for an FX6 or FX7. There are rumors that they might be out as soon as 2008. I definitely want to wait for the Wire Impregnated PolyEthylene bushings in the Torque Uniform Redistribution Differential. I am sure that a TURD WIPE would help smooth out the harmonic vibration of this unit, which really stinks.
Do any of you have advice on what I should get for a truck? Get an 06 FX5 or wait to see what the future brings?

OH NO YOU DIDN'T!!!!! Good job buddy! Now Fredvon will pull us both over on the side of the road and give us a red-headed-stepchild beating! (And I was only an E-6, I'd have to let him.) You had to bring back the "truck nutz", didn't you? Allen and New Boston aren't too far from Ft. Hood, you know. Even if he is pretty old.

Did you do enough reasearch on this Matta? No, because you know how I get when someone doesn't...
Here’s an old post I found in one of the “other” Explorer Forum archives. This was from July 2002 and it seems they had a prototype for use on a trail ride. It also looks like the guy that had the FX5 was a little spooked by the rockcrawling…

i like the fx4 ranger and think that it is one of th ebest stock truck ford has made but for what it is I like fx4 f150 a lot too.
You have to join the site to see the pics of the FX5 I suppose, but I didn’t bother with all that.
You would think that the kinks would have been worked out by now.
And as far as Fred goes, n578md, it’s not the whooping I’m worried about, really – it’s the site of him getting out of his Super Duty wearing a mini-skirt, halter top and pink pumps that scares me. I just couldn’t take it…
In light of Ernie's review, I can see why that FX5 owner didn't want to go rock-crawling. I didn't bother to join that site either so I'll just assume my interpretation of the FX5 with the help of the fine art of digital graphic manipulation is still correct.
I could probably tolerate seeing Fred like that, but if he wore a feather boa, eye-shadow and smeared lipstick, that might push it over the line for me. (I'd skidaddle and mash the gas pedal, with both feet, not just my "left" one.)

The "graphic manipulation" part belongs in Fred's court...believe me - he is graphic and sometimes violent, and manipulative to say the least.
But, back to the FX5. Yesterday I stopped in and talked to my dealer (not the drug boss...) and was told that the FX5 was still undergoing strict scrutiny from PETA. It seems that the 5th wheel has now been blamed for the death of thousands of wild animals. One researcher, while taking the FX5 on its usual test drive, said that his "instinct" was to simply "straddle" the little squirrels and rabbits along the perimeter road of the test facility.
Red Green, the driver, stated, "Been doin' it for years, you know. I see 'em flitter from the ditch and I can tell the little boogers are ready to cross the road. So, I just straddle 'em, look in the rear-view and see them make to the other side. Never run over none of 'um."
But, now, with the 5th wheel he says, it's impossible to miss them.
Ford has yet to make a statement.

You could have left out those other details. This is a family site, you know.
Perhaps Red Green could use some "handyman's secret weapon" and make a "dam" in front of the truck tha would "whisk" away a stray "wild critter" ? He could then market it and license it to Ford.
Critter Whisking Package (618A)

Hmmm, I thought the fifth wheel acted like a wheelie bar, sticks out the back (as in photo) to keep the truck from flipping over backwards when you go full power off the starting block. Seen a guy keeping up with a crotch rocket, both of them were riding on the single rear wheel going down the road.
I hope they beef up the front suspension, gotta' be a bite to come down from the wheelie and land on the front end.
Is it really true that the FX5 package will clear 4 38" and 1 35" tire bone stock (but only if you drive in a straight line and don't hit any bumps)? and I hear it will have top of the line Ranchero shocks (the same ones that came on a '77 LTD II/Ranchero, but with new stickers).

That's another reason that those of us who work for living can't afford to own an FX5 without having a degree in logging for crying out loud! Why don't the punks just leave the trucks to real men?!
To tell you the truth, Steve, I bet that guy wouldn't think twice about wearing panties.

Not without the Wishbone rear lift kit. You do realize that the IDD setup will send messages to the PCM to default if the lift kit is not installed correctly, don't you?
Never, ever install larger tires unless you get the proper lift kit. How many times have we stressed that here in the SD forum? And how many posts do you think we'll see once the FX5 hits the streets about "How big a tire..." and such nonsense as that? I can safely say that after one or two 5th-wheel-power-overs they'll stand up and testify...
I am waiting to see if any one has more fantasies of me in drag! Geeeze, guess I got to shave my legs again and hang a set of Truck Nutz off my back side for you all to get a thrill.
I thought the Fx5 was to get the new Hybrid V12 Gasoline Twin Turbo, hydraulic slave assist with the modified 5R110W that has OBD6 implemented to apply the OD to any of the 3 forward gears and reverse giving 6 forward ratios and 2 in reverse. Rumor has it Ford will have a two detent stem mounted switch that controls tow/haul and second detent apples clutch lock up on demand.
