in an effort to get my manliness inline and save big money, i have been trying to do some repairs myself. First, with my brakes. waiting way to long to change them, did not pick up on signs that they were bad..was no shreiking nor poor stopping. so, when i did my brakes i replaced the bearings (with the match race that came with them) pads and rotors. Stoppage is noticable as i come to a complete stop with out the wheel shaking or the front end of the car shimmying to pieces. However, i hear a terrible shrieking on these new pads. i put the shim and "rattle" clips back into place(from the original pads as the bendix pads did not have the clips), but there is still a terrible noise...any suggestions?
Also, after changing the fuel filter, still noticed strong hesitation and choking (lack of fuel to engine). If this persist, surely it can cause more serious damage, but if i get the codes and it suggest ignition or fuel pump errors, would you reccomend i take into the shop instead of busting out the tools myself? Thanks guys
Gee, I dunno...if you couldn't even get the brakes right, are you really sure you wanna go messing around with your fuel or ignition systems? (That was a joke, sorry. Just my warped sense of humor!) Actually,
I'm all for saving a buck, and getting elbows deep into things is a great way to learn. For your brakes, you might want to pull things back apart and inspect everything, make sure there's nothing rubbing where it's not supposed to and while you're in there add some of that blue, disc brake anti-squeal stuff to the BACK of the pads. (I've seen people put it on the surface of the pads!)
If you have a fuel starvation problem, I would recommend checking your fuel pressure first. Fuel delivery problems generally don't throw codes, as the fuel delivery system is not monitored by the computer. Problems in this area may cause other codes to appear, such as a lean condition, but fuel pressure is the best way to check the performance of the fuel delivery system. -TD
