Total Advance for '87 351W

Can one of you more experienced gents advise me of the total advance for a '87 351 W 4 BBL carb'd engine? The initial idle advance is set to 6-8* and mechanical is maxed at 36* for a total of 42-44* but the engine still pings and diesels badlyy uphill or with a load. Also, it seems the maechanical advance comes in way too early. I tried heavier springs in the distributor but the improvement was marginal. Thanks for your help.

That seems like an awful lot of timing to me. EFI mustangs run 40 degrees of total timing, and that is in a high performance car. I would think 35-36 would be sufficient total advance for a truck motor, maybe someone else can tell you the exact specification. I'd time it by ear until the pinging goes away and see how it runs.

Thanks for advice. I've tried to time by "ear" but the setting is near zero advance at idle and it starts and runs like a dog. I'm going to limit the max mechanical advance to 26* by changing the stops in the distributor; this will kepp total advance to 26* plus 6-8* at idle = 32-34*.
