I'm going to be picking up my grandfathers 1979 f-250 in Las Vegas next month. He was the only owner and it has about 80,000 original miles. The body has no rust and it's a supercab. I don't know what motor it has but I know it's an automatic. I'm pretty excited to have it. I can remember riding in it as a kid, on the way to fish in Lake Meade. I'm glad to be a new member and I'm sure that I'll be asking lots of questions in the next few months/years.
It must be exciting to be able to keep the truck with all the memories attached. Thats why I put my daughter (13) on the title of my-OUR '77. Family is what it is always all about and it's good to see someone honoring that.
Welcome to FTE. I've only been here for a month or so and have increased my Kn by at least a billion percent. I will be building a 400 soon so stay tuned as It should be funny.
I have the shorter stroke 351 Modified, they are great engines when you dump the restrictive factory components, the cams in the 79's made dogs out of them. We built ours up, they really come alive after a cam, intake and headers, that's just a start.
From what I heard the OEM cams are still good- it was the compression and timing that dogged them out. Some say that the OEM cam is really the best choice for the motor once you crank up the breathability/exhaust and put in some flat-top pistons to get the compression up. I, too thought that the cam was a culprit- ???
The 79 has an emission friendly cam with retarded timing, the 214 cam that I put in is a match to the Edelbrock Torquer 4 barrel intake, trust me, the cams are crap, the guy at the machine shop told me not to put it back in. Swap out the cam and put on an Edelbrock intake, you won't believe it's the same engine.
I have an edelbroch performer with matching carb, will be using a crane cam and 11:1 compression- I got a plan- just heard that the oem cams are good as well-- just what i heard.
