Engine hic-ups??

I was driving my dads 88 Ranger with 2.9 engine and it started to hic-up. It felt like the engine shutdown and restarted. It happens under all conditions very spoadically. I did notice that the hic-ups seemed more violent under load and higher rpms. It is very noticeable and can be felt when driving. You can go all day and only happen once, or it could happen frequently (esp. under load) Any suggestions??
Thanks, Ray.

When did it last have a tune up, including plug wires and a fuel filter?

It shure sounds ignition related, from the description you've given.

A very similar problem on my new 99 4.0L was traced to a cracked #6 plug insulator. It would go nuts in a heavy rainstorm on a pull.

So as has been suggested By Billy. I'd have a good close look @ the plugs, coil, plug wires, dist cap, rotor & primary wiring to the dist.

Look for chips, cracks, signs of carbon tracks, damaged plug wires & dist wire primary isulation, especially where it crosses vibrating metal, or touches hot parts.

The plug wires resistance should be about 1000 ohms per inch of length, 30,000 ohms max.

Let us know what you find.

i have a similiar problem on my 94 mazda. as i try to give it throttle, it chokes down (like the engine is not getting any fuel) but does not "cut off". i assumed that there was fuel inlet restriction, so i changed the fuel filter which i thought would do the trick. as i was driving today, after i had changed the filter.... i had the same problem. I am beginning to think it is the fuel pump or junk/air in the line. how do i distinguish between a fuel injection problem or an ignition problem? my b3000 has 155k miles, and i dont think it is OBD2...would i even be able to get the codes that would register this problem? thanks guys. i hope i get help soon, cause i have to commute 130 miles a day, and i am driving the misses 96 sentra till then.

You can pull the codes using the procedure in the tech info thread at the top of this forum, "pulling eec-iv codes", both trucks. Also a fuel pressure test couldn't hurt.
