Small blocks, big blocks......gotta love them all!! Let me add another twist to this little discussion and be the first to weigh in with a non Ford engine in their old truck.
Nope, I didn't go with a belly button sbc (although it would have made all the fabrication that much easier) I opted for the cubic inch king of them all and dropped the big 500ci Caddy engine in the truck. The engine's power to weight ratio is amazing and it makes phenomenal torque.
Which would be more desirable?
A fuel injected 400 hp 351 that is streetable or a 400 hp 460 that eats tires and gets pulled over by the cops for leaving black marks.
I guess it depends on what you're looking for. I opted for the Caddy engine because its been years since I've owned a tire burning monster. Them older Caddy's were very streetable and got decent mileage (if you could keep your foot out of the carb) of course they were twice the weight of my truck.............hmmmm
You might want to weigh down your rear end or you might get some wheel hop from powerful caddie. But as far as the Caddy being the cubic inch king the 460 can easly become 552, but that is almost to powerful for our trucks.
Oh yea! There are many options for punching out most any engine.
What I'm after is something besides a SBC that can be driven on pump gas without being finicky.
Years ago I twisted wrenches at a Caddy dealership and drove a 59 Ranchero and I thought that the 500 and the Ranchero would make a great combo. I didn't have the money, time, or garage space back then.

You have to ask that question?????? PUHLEASE!!! I would prefer a 600 HP 460(stroked to 552 of course) Just so I could tear up the tires and waste phenominal amounts of fuel while doing it. Not to mention the tickets I *might* get for doing said burnouts. It sure would be fun....but as for cost...ummmmm I would still prefer a 460 torque monster. The 460 makes it's torque down low as oposed to the 351W which makes it's torque up higher in the RPM band. Plus, while the 351 makes 400 HP, and so might the 460, the 351 will likely make a considerably less amount of torque when compared to the 460. I need the torque to get down the track and up the mountain passes while towing. My rig serves two purposes...it is a tow vehicle AND a race truck. What fun is THAT!

I believe bobbytnm was talking about a stock block. In which case, I believe the 500 Caddy motor is the cubic inch king. Although it may be smaller than a V-12 or possibly a V-10....I just dont know.
Now the 4.6 could be interesting...I might like to see that happen.....I couldnt afford to make it look right and perform right, but I wouldnt mind seeing someone else do it....Unless someone here wants to sponsor/bank roll me to do it....in which case as long as I get paid a wage, I'll do it!
In the comparision between small block and big block Fords I have a suggestion. First of all I have had em all, and I love em all. That said you might check out our own Fe forum here on FTE. This is one of the all time great engines. It weighs 150 pounds less than the 460 and it also is a torque monster. My '53 has a 390 and a Volare front end. You can install headers without changing to a Pinto frontend as is the case with a 460. ....sorry about that John.

haha...wheres fenders to start preachin about how nice and reliable the pintos are?
ive got enough other things to do to try to keep me out of trouble, i dont need a stroked and bored 460 on top of it...they say u need to know when to quit, but i guess i just havent learned yet...
Ford did away with the 390 but I won`t! I have one in my 67 F/B Mustang, slightly warmer over with a 428 crank and now in my 71 F350 after replacing the worn out 360. Thinking of some day putting a 390 in my 69 F100. Nicest running motors with lots of grunt! The only nicer motor would be a 428 but too hard to find and too expensive when found as they are still very much in demand.
There's a guy in Sweden who is on the Flathead Ford forum who has a Merlin V-12 tank engine, 1,000+ cubic inches, in a custom made '30's vintage frame... It is impressive, to say the least!! Only needs 1 gear...HIGH!
