Hi,
I have just got myself a F-150 4x4 1989 and the spedometer was working but it went up and down and then it died completly. The tack and all the other gauges works. Is it electric or is it a cable? and is it hard to replace and what do I need to replace....
Thanks for your help.
It should be a cable. I'm guessing you have an AOD tranny, and the cable enters near the back of the tranny, kind of towards the top, if I remember right. If that's the case, you may just try unscrewing the bracket that holds it into the tranny, then pull it out and clean it off, re-connect it and see if it works. If it does, great, if not, well, I've never replaced one, so I can't tell you how bad the other end is, but I'm sure it would include tearing into your dash.
I just had the same problem with my 89 f-150 and It was the plastic gear inside the speed sensor. On the transfer case you will find your speed sensor, if you have someone sit inside the truck you can tell if the cable is bad by spinning it with your fingers. If the cable is broke you will know. if might be the same piece I did, five bucks and the dealership. Good luck
Had the same problem with my '88. The head unit on the speedometer was out. Junkyard instrument panel for $45 and we were good to go. I didn't have tach or trip odometer on the old one. Got it on the new one.
