Well I changed my oil yesterday , 3rd oil change .. put in 14 quarts of rotella instead of 15 like the dealer said.. and the surging quit.. my truck has always had that problem, but I had never taken it in for service.. it was a little annoying but really did not bother me that much.. my truck had the first oil change done by the dealer at 6k, they put in 15 quarts... i changed the oil the second time at 12k and also put in 15 quarts, the surging continued.. I had read on here somewhere about only putting in 13.5 -14 quarts could fix the surging problem but really did not think it would help.. my buddies identical truck has 30k miles and he has always put in 15 quarts and his has never had the surging problem.. anyway THE SURGING IS GONE!!!!!!!!
my truck got to where it did it 80% of the time no matter what the temperature was, when i would come to a stop light it would start bucking and I would have to get on the brakes a little harder to stop , and the whole truck would jump around almost like it was missing
My truck did the hole surging missing out thing until winter came. Didn't have any problems all winter. The other day it was 80 degress outside and it did the surge thing again. Weather has cooled off again and no problems now. Waiting for it to warm back and the truck get back to doing it more often so I can contact the dealership. The truck sounds so bad that over the phone they can hear how bad it is running.
Hopefully this year I can get them to check out the article on this website on the back sensor plate and see if that is the problem.
My 2003 6.0 (bought back by Ford) did this even after multiple injector replacements and numerous "flashes." This got very old sitting at a stoplight in a $40,000 plus truck looking like a bozo as my truck filled the intersection with blue smoke. After nearly mowing over a Kia full of blue hairs I sent this truck packing. I now enjoy a trouble free 05.
I went to 14 qts. and surging stopped, but oil level was still at tip top of indicator. Last week I did my 30,000 miler, put in 13. It was dead center in the XXXXX of the dipstick. Now I can monitor my oil level for dilution, because I can actually read the level now on the dipstick. Also changed the tranny fluid, or at least half of it. Drained out 7 1/4 qts., put 7 1/2 back in, filter cartridge changed. $62 in parts from the local dealer. Can't decide on changing the air filter though. My indicator hasn't moved, the yellow thing is still below the first mark, which is below the 50% mark. I've never run in really dusty conditions that I know of. Guess I'll order the darn thing anyway, see if I can actually change it out. Got all the tech procedure printed out. Can't be any harder than getting the engine belts changed on my daughter's Civic. That turned into an eight hour ordeal .
Tim,
Just like RML1960, when its warm out (75-80 degrees during 1st 3 weeks of April in Illinois) I would get quick bursts or surges (up to 500 rpm for a second or 2) while steady pedal cruising. Then when I stopped at a light (foot on brake), or my destination (truck in park), the truck would sometimes stall, or worse yet, almost stall and then recover violently with a 1000 to 1500 rpm buck or surge multiple times at the same stop. Possibly a dangerous situation if you don't stand on the brake. Now its in the 40's and 50's out and the truck runs great.
My dealer first told me it was bad fuel and to use an additive...made no difference. Then I showed him the thread about the EBP sensor so they replaced it and said they found a skinned wire going to the FCM and repaired it...the problem continues. They had the truck 7 ot of 21 days in April, the mechanic drove it home 3 or 4 times and did experience the problem, but they could not figure out what it is. Now we're waiting for it to warm up outside....
