I own a 94 Explorer 2 door 4.0 4x4. I am running 35" tires on it. I need to put a taller gear in the differentials. Do these trucks use the 8.8? If so what spline are they? What "rear" do they use in the front? How can I tell what ratio I have now? ThanQ - Randy
He's correct, the rear is a Ford 8.8 axle with 31 spline axleshafts.
Front is a Dana 35 TTB.
Easiest way, IMO, to tell gear ratio is to check on the metal tag bolted to the rear differential (if still intact). 2nd line will start with a series of numbers representing the gear ratio (3 73 for example).
Dana 35's are actually more common than Ford 8.8 diffs - when you consider all the Wranglers out there. All the major manufactures make ring/pinion gears for it. Check 4 -wheel parts.
