Turn signals

Howdy everyone
Heres the "new" truck in the driveway 1981 F100 with a 4 speed and a 300, 2wd, Blue

The turn signals are acting up, the left one was working now it stopped, there is no patter developing. My first bet would be the turn signal switch"cam" located in the column. 14bucks at car quest. Autism zone quoted me 100 for who know's what part.

Can anyone shed some light on this for me?
TIA

First, ck. your bulbs and the sockets, good contact I hope, look for any fraying or corrosion on the wires near the sockets, any junction point that someone else may have "cobbed". everything ok, change the flasher they're cheap, that all done then maybe possibly the switch in the column, but even that should work if held just short of clicking in or past the click point. hope this helps

Thanks for the reply, yes bulbs and sockets are good, the left turn signal works but the right one only worked when you hold the lever just below where it sits, i was thinking a canceling spring if it even has one

Do these things only have one flasher? is it located on the fusepanel?

update, hazard lights work, turn signals are still intermeidiate

Electrical Gremlin

I will be working on a 1981 F100 monday. The turn signals are not working properly. I had it narrowed down to the turn signal cam in the steering colum. However, now the turn signals work with the motor off and the key in the run position, once you fire up the motor the turn signals stop working. The hazard lights do work fine. The battery in the truck is also brand new
My questions are:
Could the turn signal cam be at fault?
Where should i begin to trace wires? is there only one fuse panel on this truck right next to the clutch under the dash?

Any help is appreciated...

I would start checking grounds especially engine to body and battery to block.

ground wire to block was just replaced and connections were cleaned very well, so i think all the grounds are good.
