accessory bracket for air pump

My alternator blew on my 85 F150 (351W, C6, 4x4)a while back and I'm just getting around to posting this now. When it went, it actually burned the drivebelt right off, leaving only the belt between the alternator and the air pump directly above it. I went out and got a new alternator because the bearing for the alternator was completely destroyed, I could barely turn the pulley by hand, and new belts as well. When I went to put everything back on I realized that for some reason the belts were not lining up correctly. Taking a closer look at the air pump bracket, I realized that I could move the air pump forward and back (not pivoting mind you) about 1-2cm. I don't know when this happened, but the pivot bolt for the air pump has actually been bent, causing the air pump to be out of alignment with the alternator. I could not even turn the bolt with a wrench, so I'm leaving it up to my mechanic to take out. My question is on whether this was the cause of the alternator failure? This is the second alternator in 8months. Thanks.

Where are you or your shop getting the alternators ? Some of the auto part chain store parts like alternators etc usually last in the 6 to 12 month range .

I got them both from Pepboys. They were both remanufactured. It seems odd that they both went in the same fashion, with the pulley bearing going. Both times they went for about a week or two prior to them going when I went to start the truck it made a sharp shrieking noise. The first time the truck died I changed the starter thinking this is where the noise was coming from. Turns out it was the noise of the engine turning the blown alternator bearing. I just don't want to keep buying alternators every 6 or so months.
