I asked the most knowledgeable 6.0 tech I know a similar question. His reply : "Pulling the cab is a much simpler job than you might think with the proper equipment. Sometimes that's the easiest and quickest way to go for some service procedures". He sounded like it's quite routine for his shop.
I have seen several in a certain FoMoCo dealer in So Cal with the cabs about 18" in the air above the frame..... getting headgaskets, pretty crazy, but it seems to be the lesser of two evils.
good question. and the other question is, since this is a task that sounds hard to do but is really easy, will the tech gouge you for the "extra work".
yanking the cabs off of newer trucks is common practice. the dealerships close to my hometown will pull the cab just to replace spark plugs in the 1997-2003 F150's. I cant blame em a bit as crowded as new vehicles are under the hood. nothing is as simple as it used to be.
Its pretty standard practice from what I hear. Not that it would be related to a head gasket leak...but just make sure you check the more simple things before authorizing that repair. Fore example, Turbo pedistal, HPOP Fittings, valve covers, etc...
i was just wondering because i am looking at getting steel head gaskets and replacing the factory junk ones...what do they do about the electrical wires and stuff?...its hard to beleive that its just as easy to unscrew 6 bolts and jack away???
When I went to have my new truck Detailed. Had it for 2 weeks before the the dealership seen it. I seen an Exp. hoverring above the frame! I asked if they were having to replace the frame. Nope the motor, They said it was a huge time saver to lift the body off the frame!!
I see it as no big deal. I replaced the plugs on our old Expy and my old F250 5.4L and with 9 hours combined I can see how it would be MUCH faster with the proper equipment to lift the cab (be it Expy, F-150 or SD - Excursion, I am not so sure about!). The stealer I went to said as much. Very easy to lift the body even off the Expy.
