I just installed an overhead console I bought online and followed the wiring instructions on a couple of other sites. The compass and temperature display works fine. My question regards the lights. They only come on when the door is open AND the switch is on (basically like another dome light). Is that right? Or should they also serve as map lights when the door is closed (by simply pressing the switch)?
Nevermind. I think I figured it out. One of the wires I tapped wasn't the wire I thought it was. (Diagrams for the installation were for a Ranger, not Explorer).

I've been wanting to add an overhead consel to my 93 Explorer XLT but I can't verify that there is a wiring harness up under my headliner. Didn't want to cut into it find it wasn't there. I can't find any reference in any repair manual schematic to overhead consel.
So what year is yours, what year consel fit it and how did you manage the wiring harness?
There wasn't a wiring harness in mine. Had a pigtail that someone sold me with the console and I had to splice wires. Here's one site that has some installation instructions: http://www.explorer4x4.com/overhead.htm. I think 95s through 01s are the same. Mine is a 2001, but I stuck a 97 console in mine. I've seen some people install the console in Broncos and Rangers, vehicles that don't even offer the option, so perhaps you would be able to stick one on regardless of year, like a recent one on your 93.
Yeah I first saw this article 2-3 years ago. That's how long I've been thinking about this. Doesn't sound difficult but not a simple bolt in either. Not a high priority now. I'd have to run some wires, maybe make a bracket. OK, thanks for the feedback.
