Hello from Washington
My first ride I purchased when I was 15 was a 1953 F 100 powered by a Merc 312 with a 3spd on the tree and an overdrive.
My current ride is a 1995 F250 extended cab 4x4 powered by a 460.
I purchased this truck used in 1997 with 30,000 miles, it now has 158,000 on it.
Last fall I removed the transmission (E4OD) in my driveway using a borrowed motorcycle jack. I took it into a local transmission shop here in Vancouver Washington and had them rebuild it, also they split the transfer case and went through it. It's been working very well since, except for one minor problem it leaks fluid when in 4 wheel drive. Yesterday I was doing service work on the truck and was shocked to find out the fluid level was 1 qt low in the transfer case, I hope I didn't damage it do to obvious neglect of checking it before. It's only been driven in 4x4 a few time's since I reinstalled it in the truck. It looks like the source of the leak is a small weep or vent hole in the rubber boot seal located in the rear of the transfer case where the yoke of the rear driveshaft is inserted. That hole is pointed down when it possibly should be pointed up. I'm going to call the transmission shop today to ask what they think. Any ideas from you people as to the problem would be appreciated. You can e-mail me @ sidfw@aol.com anyhow looking forward to meeting new people on this web site.
Sincerely Sidney FW
It should come with a rubber boot.
I had some U joints go out last year and the vibration in the drivehsaft ruined my seal too.
I doubt that running it 1 quart low hurt anything. The Chain slings oil/fluid everywhere.
Be sure to take the transfer case number with you as Ford had 3 or 4 different transfer case options.
