Plug in block heater. make sure fuel is in the desired tank. remove filter and fill it with clean fuel. Crack loose all the injection lines at the injectors. Crank on starter for short time only. (the starters are very sensitive to overheating). May have to crank on starter several times to get fuel pumped up. When fuel shows up at injectors snug fitting nuts tight. Crank on starter again. Engine will most likely run rough until all the air is out of the fuel system. REMEMBER ..... DONT CRANK ON THE STARTER TOO LONG AT ONE TIME ... LET IT COOL DOWN FOR A MINUTE OR SO BEFORE CRANKING ON IT AGAIN.

I sthe purpose of loosening the lines to se when it will start? Or is it to assist in releasing the air in hte lines, and you have to loosen all of them?

Edit: also, upon rebuilding and reassembly, is there anything special to do like priming with oil or using petro-jelly in certain areas?

keeping the fuel lines loose sure lets the air out in a hurry, thus helping to start quicker. Some guys pack the oil pump with vaseline, I dont and I never pre lubed anything in diesel rebuild. My small block, I packed the oil pump and used special lube on the cam, kept the ignition off and cranked the engine for a bit to lube the system, but not any of my diesels.
knock yourself out...whatever way youre happy.
