I scored a pair of Boston Acoustics RX-57 speakers for my truck the other weekend from the junkyard ($8 a piece!!!) and want a nice head unit to go along with.
I went to best buy, and the salesman tried to sell me a 2-channel amp, because the difference would be night and day. I didn't buy anything because, clearly, I don't know what I'm doing with stereo equipment quite yet.
Will the difference between a nice Kenwood head with the speakers and adding a 2-channel amp really be night and day? Or was this the salesman trying to make a little more money off me? I'll be doing the installation myself.
It depends how loud and clear you want your sound. The head unit's internal amp is ok, but if you want it loud you'll need an amp. What are the speaker's RMS rating? If I were you, I would check out a local car audio shop. You'll get a better selection and probably better prices than best buy.
An external amp will bring the most out of those speakers...even a small 50x2 (rms) will be light years of ahead of the amplification your deck is capable (for the most part, disregard a head units power ratings) of.
Personally I won't shop at Best Buy, or Circuit City, or any of those places. They always try to rip you off. Like triton said, go to a professional car audio shop. Pick their brains, and make your own decision. Personally I believe an amp is a very wise choice, but this depends on your personal tastes.
