My wife was driving the truck. The truck overheated and she unforunaltiy drove it to long in this condition. When I got to the truck we let it cool for an hour or so. Then I poured a couple gallons of water in the radiator. When we got it started we could not see where the leak was. There was no obvious leaks at this time so she followed me home and it all blew out in a matter of 4 to 3 miles as I was driving. I filled it back up and drove it home, the truck would not go past 10 mph. Luckily I was only 3 miles away from home. I did a compression test. # 1 cyclinder had 0 compression reading, wet and dry. #2 cylinder had 90 compression, wet and dry. And all the rest had 160 compression. I also found antifreeze in my oil. I need a few ideas on what I could do about this. I dont know if I damaged the low-end of the motor and the topend. I dont have it in my skills to check the block. Could it be warped? If I take the heads off and replace them with new ones should this put me back on the road? Because this is a very nice truck. I am going to keep it for a while. It is a 1989 Ford XLT Lariat, loaded automatic 3 speed with air. Would it be better to buy a new or re-built or used engine and which years would every thing bolt in my 89 460 all the little sensors and crap like that? Please tell me my different options I have. Hopefully I just ruined the head and not anything else. Thank you!! Any advice is greatly appreciated!
The head gasket is obviously gone . Its really hard to say until you remove that head what the extent of the damage is to the head & block . Best case scenario , just the head gasket is all thats wrong , Worst case , cracked/warped head , block etc . Also make sure the cause of it overheating is found & repaired . Id drain the oil asap because coolant will do damage to any bearings it comes in contact with . I believe the overall warp limits is .003 with a max of .006 overall . There are tools made for checking warp limits , so once you have the head off a machine shop can check that for you .
Do not know what state or city you are in.
But I have a set of 460 heads (resurfaced, complete valve job) from a 89'FI with
center bolt valve covers.
could not use them with the 1978 exhaust system and carb.(installed motor in a 1978 F-150).
also have the alum. valve covers if interested.
