gas milage

I have a 2004 turbo diesel, ext cab 4x4 with 10,000 miles on it. My ave. MPG city is 12.5 and I am lucky to get 14.5 highway. I was thinking the 6.0 litre would give me better MPG. Any members have similar scenario or thoughts ?

John, Where are you located (elevation etc.) what type of tires or mods?
When I have my summer tires on my 6.0 I get very impressive mpg (16 avg, 17.5-19 hwy) although when I run the burley studded snow tires it drops BigTime-

Due to being in NJ, I'd bet you're still getting winter blend fuel. That has seemed to be my big nemesis. I lose about 2 mpg with that. Also are you using any type of additive? Hubs locked? Good tire pressure? Etc., etc.

Stock everything. Hope it is the winter fuel scenario. On this site I started reading a bit about the problems with some trucks having bad gas milage. I was thinking about getting a Superchip or Predetor tuner to help my situation. Then I was thinking maybe I should try to fix my stock truck problem first or I would be asking for trouble down the road.

I previously had a 510HP Lightning and needless to say, I still put my foot into the throttle a bit too much. That's probably not helping my situation.

Yep, your right foot is the most important deciding factor.

I find that my boost gauge is a good indicator... if it's passing 20PSI, you can almost see the fuel gauge dropping at the same time. If I drive mine moderately, I get 16MPG in the city (Dallas stop-and-go driving) and 19-20MPG on the highway, depending on speed. And I've only got ~1,100miles on mine. The truck's bone stock with the exception of Stanadyne Performance added.

I am getting about 14mpg with the winter fuel in it. During the summer I get about 15 maybe 16 mpg consistantlyin the city. I also have 285/70/16's so I expect it wont be as good as I could get. I have never had it on a long highway trip...but I will to see what it will really do. It is mostly a stock truck with a MBRP cat back exhaust. I also use power service at every fill up. This did help a bit but most importantly it make the truck start better in the winter and runs quieter. Hang in there I am sure it will get better. Try running an additive and keep the go pedal at a respectable position and that will help too. Enjoy the truck

I’m getting between 15 and 16 mpg empty here in Colorado, and that is running 84 MPH on I-25, city driving, and embarrassing GTs all of the time (read, not trying for good MPGs) with my 03 build 04, with 3.73, auto trans, 4” turbo back, and a very recently installed SCMT. I run the fuel additive from Wal-Mart (forgot the name, a lot of people here use it) in the truck at every fill up.
