retro 302 timing
In my "59 F100 Panel I've got an 84 Towne Car 302 that I've stripped of all emissions stuff except the PCV valve. Added Duraspark II ignition/distributor, Edelbrock Performer intake manifold and replaced the Ford TBI with a Holley Pro-Jection System. Am experiencing backfiring through the exhaust when deccelerating. I suspect it's timing but am somewhat confused by what year's setting to use. The Haynes manual says the 84 Lincoln 302 setting is 10 BTDC, but that the 1980 - 83 carbureted models' setting range from 6 BTDC in '80 to 10 in '83. Currently set at 8 and runs well except for the noise when deccelerating. Will check intake manifold bolts & exhaust too. I prefer to call on your experience before trying trial-and-error.
