cv boots

hey guys,
i hope i am posting in the right place. a friend of mine is needing to replace his cv boots on his 4x4[non ford]. but i was wondering if anybody has used the ''quickboot'' which is split and is solvent welded, saves alot of time but will it hold up ?
thanks for any info,

I used on of those things about 10 years ago on a car my dad was trying to sell. I had a heckuva time trying to get the halves together long enough for the solvent to set up, and wrangling it into place without getting grease into the sealing lip was also tricky.

I jacked the car up and put it on stands. This let the suspension droop, which put an angle in the CV joint - it didn't help matters. Put the stands under the axle or use ramps to keep the shaft in line.

Personally, I would view the split boot as I view any "quick fix". It's ok to hold things together until you have time to fix it properly, but I would not bet on it for the long run.

Your mileage may vary.

Cheers,
Eric

Remove the axle, use a split boot that bolts together, pack the joint with grease after wiping it clean (no brake clean), and use red RTV to seal the split boot while bolting it together. Works pretty well.
