I Have A 1989 F150 4x4 W/5.8 L., C6 Tranny. The Truck Was Wrecked (minor Front End Damage) And Parked For A Little Over 1 Year. Installed New Front Clip, Put Everything Back Together And Tested. Tranny Will Not Auto Upshift From 1-2, Or 2-3. I Can Manual Up Shift From 1-2 But Not 2-3 (tranny Stays In 2. If I Start Out In Drive, Tranny Will Stay In 1 Until I Manual Shift To 2. Fluid Is New And Proper Level. Replaced Modulator Because There Was Fluid In Line When I Checked It. Have Good Vacuum . Dropped Control Valve And Disassembled. Found Nothing Wrong. Keep In Mind I'm No Mechanic, Just Trying To Get By And Have Fun Getting This 4x4 Going. Any Ideas?
Sounds like the valve body is sticking, I've used KW Trans X to cure trannys with similar problems it's worth a try anyway. Just pour it in and drive it around working it through all the gears.
The governor on the C6 is about half-notorious for plugging. The governor is attached to the output shaft and spins with it. The purpose of the governor is to cause an increase in pressure with RPM to overcome line pressure in the transmission. When governor pressure from the governor acts on the shift valves, it overcomes line pressure, a shift occurs. If there is no governor pressure, the transmission will not shift.
If I remember right, when I had a problem like that, throttle (A LOT OF THROTTLE) would make it shift to second. Couldn't get third until I fixed the vacuum problem.
Thanks for all the tips. I'm thinking it's probably the governor sticking. I did add a quart of Trans X and ran it for a couple miles. When I got up to 35mph it shifted to 2nd, then at 50 mph it shifted to 3rd. At about 50 I "popped" the gas pedal and that's when it shifted into 3rd. Does that still sound like governor sticking to yall? I dont know if I should try to do it myself or let a mechanic have it. I'm short on funds but I'm not really set up for this type of work. Just gotta say since I've found this web site I'm amazed at all the help out there. Hat's off to all.
