caught on fire

Needing help with my 87 f 150 I6.Today it started to die going down the road (sputter, knock, back fire)I pulled over on the shoulder got out and the underside of my truck was on fire.Luckily we put out the fire(mainly just the undercoating was involved). We got the truck home and checked the fuel system it was ok(no leaks, lines ok, filter, pumps work ok)The fire looks like it started by the cat converter. The truck starts and runs for a few seconds than dies. I ran a bar through the cat converter seem to be clear. I sure could use any advice on what might be the problem(cant drive it until im sure its fixed

How was the truck running before the fire ? Mileage etc ? When you say you ran a bar thru the cat , exactly how did you do this ? If the cat got hot enough to ignite the undercoating then the engine most likely running way too rich .

The truck was running excellent before everything happened. It has 90,000 on it. when i start it up it runs great, sometimes for 20 minutes, other times for 20 seconds. I'm thinking that it could be the TFI module

caught on fire

Had similar problem with a Fairmont once - while it didn't catch fire the exhaust pipe right before or right after the cat (don't recall which) was glowing red - I'm not saying I could have sworn it was red, I'm saying it was the color orange-red and glowing. Hot stuff! I shut it down and had it towed to a local mechanic I trust. He said my choke pull off was not working. Replaced it and we all lived happily ever after.

Might check that.
