Smile Control Trac 4x4 question

I have a 2002 Explorer EB with control trac (auto 4x4) and when I push the 4x4 high dash button or the 4x4 low button, I get no indicator light or anything. I checked the fuse under the hood (#18) removed it, and replaced it with another (although nothing wrong visably with the old fuse). I then pushed the butoons again and found system working. I go for a drive in the auto mode and when I return home I get the same problem as before. No indicator lights. I check the fuse again (not blown) replace it and find the system working. Seems like the system resets itself each time I change the fuse. This is frustrating...

Has anyone heard of this before and if so where do I look next.

I hace '02 limited that had same problem, had it services by the dealer and they told me it was a bab control trac module and the also had to repair a groung wire. I became very suspicious when they said they needed to repair a ground wire, so I akded for the old module after the work was complete. Diagnosis, module, and labor was $425. The module is located under the dash left of the glove box. I looked at the new module and saw the groung repair, the cut on of the wires feeding the module and bypasse it, the bypass runs behind the passenger side kick pad. There must be a technical service bulletin for this ground issue, it's worth looking to see if there is a service bulletin, the ground repair may be all thats wrong. Its worth a try.

Thanks for the info, since I bought this explorer used, Ford says "sorry out of warranty (55000 miles) so the used dealer is covering it. I gave them your info. I'll post results.
