Engine ran radically. 2.9 lit. ranger, fuel injected, 5 speed. What transpired, I had just driven for 20 minuets, on belt way to heat it up to temp, ran good no problems. Stooped to shop for 1 hour, when I started it up it started to knock hard and shake, oil pressure dropped, and the lifters rattled radically not just tapping. I drove it for ten miles on and off it would get better and worse but never returned to full power. Now it will not start, wants to fire up, one or two cylinders fire. I have disconnected the exhaust so it is not the cat, checked the wires acceptable resistance, added new plugs, plan to check the rest of the ignition system but could it be in the fuel distribution system, like maybe a clogged filter, injector problem or a leak, any ideas or experience? any help appreciated.
Take a plug wire off and stick a screwdriver up inside it, and while holding the plastic handle, bring the metal shank very near a piece of metal on the block, and get someone to crank the engine. You should have a strong blue spark jumping from the screwdriver.
Then find the fuel injectors and the common fuel rail that feeds them. Follow it around on both sides and somewhere along the way you may come across a fitting with what looks like tire valve. Hold a rag around the valve and push the center of it like you would let air out of a tire. Fuel should squirt out.
If all the above checks out, I would bump the engine over till the timing marks line up. Then pull the dist cap off, and make sure the rotor is pointing to #1 cylinder sparkplug wire. If it isn't, bump the engine over 1 more revolution, and line the marks up again. Then check the rotor again to see if it's point to #1 wire. If the rotor does not point to #1 sparkplug wire in either case, then the timing chain may have jumped a couple of teeth.
