Hi, I've got a 1985 Ford F-150 XLT 302 with 23,569 miles, And it has absolutally horrible shifting, It shifts hard into every gear. And it doesn't like to shift into 4th gear. Its an automatic. My dad says its an Electronic 4 Speed overdrive transmission. I believe its a E40D. And another thing it does is this: When you hit the gas on it, and when you let your foot off of the gas, it downshifts Immediately. And its a hard jerking effect that you can feel. Any suggestions to help this? Please Help!
Thanks,
Nick
????????? i thought the e4od tranny was introduced
around the late '80s or early '90s im sure you meant to type 95 instead, thats sounds more like it, it be hard to believe you had an 85 with only 23 something thousand, besides they werent even efi in 1985. anyways, my dads truck has the e4od he had to have it rebuilt it jerked like hell , there were bands broken and clutches all burnt up, it got water logged durring hurricane floyd here in NC, if you tranny is not mechanically malfunctioning, get you a tester and read any trouble codes the eec is putting out, im sure youll have some.

Nope guys, It's really an 85 Body, but I forgot to mention that it's a 98 Crate Engine 302. That may have confused you guys. And yes its on a Carb setup. I orginally thought that it was not like lined up correctly considering its a 98 Engine, but a 85 Transmission, I read something out of my 85 Maintaiance manual and it said something about transmissions and didn't even list the E40D. It had the AOD. So i'm leaning towards it being that. But is there any lubricatants that could help correct this? But I am just hoping it doesn't die on me. I mean it works, its just a pain that it downshifts immediately after letting off of the gas. Suggestions?
Thanks,
Nick
I've had this truck since June and It's always done it. I talked to my dad, and he says that he's 100% sure that, the transmission kickdown is not the problem. Any other suggestions?
Nope, It goes and downshifts after I let off immediately, also, when i'm building up speed and its gaining speed it jerks hard into the gears. Today i went under the tranny and got this number, Maybe it will help identify what kind of transmission it is.
I have an 83 with the AOD and it has a TV cable that is attached from the tran to that carb linkage> If the cable is out of adjustment then it will not shift right, it has to have the right amount of presure on it or the transmission will not function properly. It will ruin the transmission in a short time. I dont know if that is what is going on with yours but Its worth checking out
Well, I checked the TV Cable, and my dad says that its not the right answer. He said it makes sense but it can't be the right answer for the problem that i've got. Does anyone else got any suggestions? Please
Nick
Hummmmm, how did you check the TV cable Nick? I know that it takes a special tool from Ford to check the presure on that cable. My 83 would slam into and out of the gears when that TV cable was not under the right presure. I would play with the adjustment on that and see if it makes a difference at all. I think the presure on the cable is suppose to be around 35 pounds. I didn't have the Ford tool so I just played with the adjustment on mine and I was amazed at what a difference it made.
Johnboy,
I didn't even check the cable myself, me and my dad went out and he looked at a buch of tubes to see if he could find it, and he sai that he found it and said that it wasn't the problem, and he didn't want to play with, That is waht i'm all about, I'm only 15 and i've got 2 months before i turn 16 so i don't care if i screw it up now, I jsut want it to be working better when I'll be driving it. So your suggestion is just to play with it? I think today when I look at it, i'll do it myself and see what it does.
Thanks for the reply. appreciate it.
