Backward Muffler installation?
Backward Muffler installation?
Hey,
Just got a new muffler installed and the Inlet Port Arrow on it is pointing toward the tailpipe.! Would this cause me problems.? I assume thats why they put the arrow there.

If you look into the muffler, you would see that there are probably baffles punched into the internal pipe, and they are directional. I would turn it around pronto.

I know you are probably joking, but, I do not think its fair to post that on a topic where someone is asking a serious question (to them).
If a muffler has an arrow on it, then turn it around because it does make a difference. Otherwise it would not be there. On mufflers where it does not matter, as an example glass packs, there are no arrows. As someone correctly pointed out, the baffles could be facing backwards and that would kill performance by causing excessive back pressure because it is hitting a wall of steel instead of an open vent.

actually i have fuel injection..
I took it back to the installer and apparently he put in a muffler that was for a Ford F250 because it fit and he didnt have the one to fit my bronco in stock. He never told me this when he did it.
I spent 20 minutes llistening to him tell me how its the same muffler you just turn it around. I just kept telling him whats the arrow for then and why does it look different looking in one end from the other. He says it doesnt matter all mufflers are so simple it doesnt really matter how you install it. At that point i realized he was an idiot. Told him to get the right muffler and install it (no charge(of course)) and he agreed. Said he had to order it and that was 2 weeks ago so basically hes stalling thinking Ill go away.
My truck pretty much sounds crappy in the exhaust area. Engine runs great just i can feel the whole exhaust system under my truck vibrating and making strange sounds depending on the weather and time of day.

Make sure the exhaust isnt touching the underside of the truck, if you can feel it vibrating. I have seen bad installs cause that many times.

Muffler shops have mufflers "hot shotted" over to them all the time. Almost always in just a few hours. If you're in CA, and he keeps stalling, threaten to go to the Bureau of Automotive Repair... that'll let him know that he better not dawdle any longer.
Good luck!
BTW, instead of a stock muffler, you may want to consider a Walker Dynomax - only slightly louder (mainly deeper) - and much better flow. Plus, most models flow are reversable, meaning they flow the same in either direction. This might be a real bonus, given the idiot
you're dealing with at the muffler shop!

If its ravin' I don't think it is reversible. I am actually just on thier site right now so I will have a look. They aren't reversible, I was actually just looking at the differences between them and the Vortex V-Baffle I have and there really isn't much diference. But no they aren't reversible. Tell them to fix it and pay more attention to what they are doing. They aren't reversible but you still can, they just don't sound right, no worse for performance. Just as a guess when you look in the inlet you can see just smooth baffles while when you look in the outlet the baffles have holes in them right? Those muffles will sound like A$$ for the first month or so depending on the amount you drive.

Is he still stalling - or did he do you right.
If not next time you walk in - take a small jar of vasaline and put it on the counter. ask him if hes about done or is he going to keep dragging this out since its really starting to hurt.
Tell him you will report his business to the BBB and any other agency that deals with rip off places.

Got the right muffler installed this weekend. Sounds a lot better and less rough. Alos idling problem seems to have dissapeared but I also changed my power steering pump so could be that.
the muffler man tried to convince me the direction doesnt matter evern though the muffler had an inlet arrow pointing towards the back end.
Told him just to replace it. He stalled for 2 weeks saying he will order it till I threatened him ("economically") and magically it appeared the next day.
Corporations.
