Man I tell ya I have had a time runnig this one down... My timing is set at *10 on my 351w with pertronix ignition. I have had this hesitation (the motor is new rebuilt) since I put the motor in. After buying a new edelbrock 600 cfm I read the manual that came with it. There is suggestion to do a vaccum test on the manifold, wich I did and what the vaccum read was about 16 or 17. Normal on the gauge is 20. With-in the reading of 16-17 on the gauge there is an area in red that reads timing is late. But when I advace the distributor to bring the gauge into the normal reading of 20 the timing is so far advanced the motor really runs rough. So my question is not only what is wrong but I have a concern that may be I did not get my timing gears properly alighned. I did get my timing set at *10 right before top dead center. It always starts right up and never pops or back fires. So.... is there anyone brave enough out there in Ford Land to answer this one?
Thanks for the info on timing but I know how timing works. What I need to know is that why does my vacuum gauge say my timing off if the timing light says it is in time?

i recently rebuild a 351w also, i also found that the vac was lower, but that may be due to cam, did you change the cam? if you have a steady 16/17" vac that may be ok, mine is, do you have any vac leaks, i had some on mine but once i found them, the vac improved from 13 to 17', engine runs well, if the distributer was off by one tooth, you'd probably notice some back fire or popping, did you set timing with the vac disconnected from distributor? i didn't the first time i set the timing and someone on here suggested that i try timing that way, seems ok now, one that i noticed about the edelbrock 600 and the performer manifold i bought, the front and back mounting flanges are a good thickness, but the side flanges are quite narrow and i had a vac leak there, dumb design, i emailed edelbrock about this but they must be ashamed of the design as they didn't mail me back. and i may be off base on the 16/17" vac, but its what i noticed. as well you might try to set timing at about 14btdc and see how it runs, good luck
what did you do about the vac leaks you found (how did you fix them)? And no I did not change the cam........ would there be some effect similar to what I am dealing with.....I thought about changing it to an r.v. cam since it is in a truck.
Thanks for your help..Tony

with a wilder cam(anything over stock can be considered wilder) vac tends to be less, but if you didn't change the cam then thats a mute point, the vac leaks i found where at the sides of the intake manifold, iinstalled new gaskets and sealer again, then i ran the engine for a few minutes and retorqued the bolts, ran it again and did the same thing for 3 times, the hardest leak to find was where the 600 (1406) edelbrock sits on the intake the flanges on the sides of the intake are quite abit narrower than the front and back, so even by pressing with my fingers on the carb gasket i found i could make worse or better the leak, i got some thin metal plates and gaskets in a kit and installed 1 plate and 2 gaskets, that fixed that problem, now i have 17" of steady vac, i'm reasonaly happy with the carb, but don't know if its set a little too lean or not, which i attemped to do by the edelbrock book. good luck
