1995 E4OD Slipping
Hey all got a little problem here with my 95 f-150 5.8 E4OD. Tranny shifts fine under normal driving conditions.....a little slow engaging into drive sometimes... But if I'm pullin or haulin a light load (18 foot boat) or a round bail of hay, the tranny doesnt like it. It won't engage into drive unless you bump the RPM's up to about 1700 and when it does engage, it slips. After you let it cool down its fine. Like I said before, it's fine under normal driving conditions, but if you haul a light load or even play around in the mud, it slips. Any Ideas?
I forgot to add that it isn't low on fluid. It is actually a little too high. I put a bottle of lucas in it I'm gonna see if that helps. I can't help but feel that the tranny isn't staying cool enough. Prolly get a new cooler or one with an electric fan from somewhere...
A bigger cooler wont hurt, I can't see an 18' boat working the tranny that hard it's not like your driving a toyota. After I first posted I've been thinking about your tranny more and it sounds like you have a sticky valve body. What is the condition of your fluid? I gotta say get that thing flushed and add the cooler an E4OD re-do around here is about $2500
Do pull the codes. Your PCM stores tranny codes as well as the engine codes, that would help a lot to find out what is going on, it will even tell if the tranny got too hot.
Keep me posted

Try checking and adjusting the shift linkage and MLPS. It isn't very hard to do, costs nothing in parts, and may clear up the problem.
If this doesn't help, I suggest you drop the transmission pan and inspect the contents. If you see ground up bits of metal in there, you have internal mechanical damage. A little bit of fibrous "fuzz" from the clutches is OK. If things look good, replace the filter, refill the trans, and keep looking.

Thanks for the input guys. I'm thinking I might flush the fluid again although I just did back in January. What do you suggest fluid wise? I think I read somewhere that if you put the cheaper fluid in it, it will shift better and engage in drive alot quicker. What do you guys think? I'm not the smartest person when it comes to automatic trannys....
