I am looking at putting a 302, 5-speed and transfer case from an F-150/250 in my jeep wrangler.
I am not sure what 5-speeds were fitted to the f-150/250 4x4 and how they will hold up to harsh off road use. Any suggestions on a good year to pick at a junk yard would be very much apreciated.(a model number would help my search)
I would like to keep an all ford drivetrain to go with the explorer 8.8 rear end that I have in the jeep.
PS I do not want a four speed as I need the overdrive.
Sounds like to me you would want a ZF S5-42 tranny. It has a granny first gear which would be more suited to your off road driving than the Mazda M5OD which has a rather tall first gear.
Good luck in your search because they ain't cheap,
believe me cause I been looking. When I finally do
make the swap I think I will go for a rebuilt with a good warranty rather than a junkyard refugee with unknown history.

I agree with the ZF recommendation. The M5OD tranny is not really suitable for your situation. The problem you will find is that the ZF's weren't very common on the F-150's the F-250's had most of them AND the F250's didn't have too many 302's mostly 351's, 460's etc. So, if you find a 302 it will most likely have the M5OD tranny (it'll say E8TA on the sticker and the bellhousing is part of the tranny) while the F250's will have the ZF trannies but not the 302. Are you getting me here? So what you want to find is a ZF off a 351 equipped F-250 since the bellhousing should match the 302 perfectly (the ZF has a removable bellhousing). And a 302 off a F-150.
I know that sounds confusing, maybe someone here can clear it up better.
Yes, you will probably find the ZF in a 250 or 350. The 4.9, 5.0 and 5.8 all have the same bolt pattern so any would work. I am pretty sure however the ZF does not have a removeable bellhousing, it is a one piece case. Just for chuckles, I e-mailed Jasper transmissions asking for a price on this little jewel. How's $1,941 plus a core charge of $450 sound? It does have a 3 yr. 50,000 parts and 18 mo, 25,000 mile warranty on labor. I may have to rethink my strategy here.
I know of one junkyard that had rebuilt ones for $1,000 but I didn't ask about any warranty and I don't know who rebuilt them. I wonder what Ford gets for them nowadays? I seem to recall seeing ads in magazines several years ago (when I wasn't looking for one) of Ford parts places selling them for $1,000.
The search continues........
