Hey ken, I have a diablo chip in my 96 F150 5.8 and im am thinkng about having it reprogramed for 31 tires and raise the speed limiter. But I was also wondering if you could tune it to run 92-93octane instead of 91? Would it make much of a improvement?
1996 can't have the speedometer adjusted for the tires size change, but it can raise the limiter. Normally the chip is programmed for 92+ unless you live in California (91) or request something else.
K thanks, but could you raise it to like 94octane or something then? I am not so concerned about raising the octance/timing as one day I tried running the chip on pump 87 for the fun of it and then motor never pinged once throughout the whole powerband. That and a local pump sells 93 now here.
Yeah, certainly can raise it for that. 94 is very good premium, some places in the country go as low as 91. When ran the lower octane you were running the chip in the premium setting? What were the weather conditions, if you remember?
Yes,I tried running pump 87 with the chip on "2 stage" it was probley in the 60s when I tried that, it was awhile ago so I cant remember for sure. As long as it doesnt ping im safe right? Since it seemed fine on 87 thats why im was wondering if you could up it a little bit to get max power from the chip on good premium gas?.Thanks ken.
I tried it again today on pump gas and did not notice any pinging, I think I am going to have it dynoed for the fun of it one of these next days to see if their is any HP improvement with the chip on or off..
Okay, I'm wondering if the octane plug has been pulled. Has it even been in for service? Worse case, we can update it for more timing it you want that, just pay for shipping.
I'm in a similar situation. I have the standard tune on my 93 4.0. I haven't tried 87 octane, but it runs fine on midgrade 90 octane E10. Since I got my chip, 92 octane has become availalbe where 91 was the standard in my area, so I'd like to keep the current tune as an economy mode, since the 90 octane E10 is actually $.10 cheaper than 87 octane regular and my mileage better using the chip. I was curious what kind of improvement I might notice if I were to add the 94 octane tune.
