" riddle me this...."

What does "flash" mean? I've seen it refered to the tranny and the engine, but have no idea what you are talking about. What are the pros and cons of having it done? How do you know it needs to be done? Bought my 6.0 last November (new) and living up here in Alaska I use 4 wheel drive almost constantly, mainly highway driving and run the winter blend. I've been averaging about 17 miles to the gallon. Does this sound good. I don't really notice any problems with my truck, though I did get my recall notice about the pinion shaft coming loose and causing (my favorite<tell a liar(lawyer). wrote this) "metallic particle contamination" and had my transfer case lever pop out fixed. Thanks for the input and help.....

I would search the forums and get more details, before making that decision on flashing a 2004 without any problems.

Flash means: pull your pants down, and...

Now really: It means to erase your current modules programming (it generally is done to the PCM - Powertrain Control Module) and replace it with the latest calibration
The calibration can be there to improve many things, and unfortunately in the same process it can make other things worse.

If you are happy with your trucks performance I wouldn't worry about it, 17mpg sounds pretty good, especially with winter blend.

hope that helps,

Well then, will they have to flash it when they do the tranny work?

What Tim said is spot on.
However they can flash the tranny as well (TCM - Transmission Control module), but it has nothing to do with the recall.
