air pump disconnection
does anyone know what kind of effects I can espect from disconnecting the air pump on my 85 F150 with 351w? The pivot bolt is bent and causing an unnatural angle in the v-belt from the alternator to the air pump, and it was destroying alternator bearings in about 6mo a piece. I took off the belt for the pump, and it really doesn't seem to make a performance difference, although I'm sure it won't pass a sniffer test like this.

I took my air pump off and it runs great. I even pass the sniffer test with flying colors, but you may not pass a visual inspection. I believe some of the heavier duty trucks in that time frame did not have to have air pumps, so you may get by.

Your HC and CO emissions will probably be higher, especially when the engine is cold. It may not affect emissions much when the engine is warm. The HEGO sensor will take longer to warm up, so fuel economy will suffer accordingly.

The pump on an '84 I used to own siezed up and burned the belt off. I just let it go. There seemed to be no difference in performance.
Went for MD emissions test and it failed badly.
Stuck on a rebuillt pump and it passed with flying colors.
