Hey guys,i just got a great deal on a 1993 ford explorer from a salvage yard, only thing is that it doesnt have a title. Id love to register it cause its such in good shape. The guys at the junkyard sid itd be a real pain to apply for the title, and that i should look online cause some places offer title recovery. I dunno how that works,or if its safe. Has anyone ever used something like that online? Thanks for any information you could pass along.
Check one of these guys. I'd run a carfax first, to see if a duplicate title might be had (many states can do this). If not, all things being equal, it might be easier to buy another '93 Explorer that's been destroyed (translated- cheap), exchange VIN plates, and start over.
edit: keep all sales documentation from both, so you can prove you actually own them.
Many years ago I bought and restored a 67 Firebird convertible I found at a junkyard. The car had been retired due to a blown motor (400 Ram Air) and high miles. To title the car, I had to drive it to the WA state patrol inspection facility, show ALL receipts for my parts, and allow them to inspect the car to their satisfaction. A title was then issued; in WA it took about 3 weeks for the wheels of the gov't to go round and round then the title appeard in the mail. It was really very simple. The title was never lost by anyone, but was surrendered to the state by the junkyard.
What the hell does that junkyard mean it would be a real pain to title it? They would only take it in if it a clear title; they don't want stolen cars. In your case, do plan on a salvage title given where the rig came from.

Hmm,hey guys just a update, the salvage yard really screwed us over, they said they were trying to find it for a week, then we just recently called they said they have it and dont want to give it to us cause it was bought "for parts" and they dont want us to put it on the road, then have something break on it then come back and yell at them, not like wed do that anyway. but they basically said there gonna destroy it,we even offered them a hundred bucks for it. still nothing. But we did get our hands on a dead 93 explorer and are thinking about swaping the vins like you mentioned. How would we go about swaping the vins? the obvious hard one is the one in the front window, how does that one come out? does it come out with the dash pad? or is it something im gonna have to cut out? any information would be great! thanks in advance and thanks for the help thus far.
it's just a piece of paper, then can destroy it all they want, you would still need to contact the RMV and have them do a title search and issue a new title, i've e-mailed them many a times and do to popular belief they have actually been very helpful!
