Howdy
I have a '82 F150 302 that starts and runs just fine. Accelerates strong, no noticable oil in the water or water in the oil, good tuneup parts, etc.
The one drivability issue that it has is a highway speed ping. It isn't real strong above above about 50 mph and at 60 the ping starst to show up.
A couple questions:
1)The PO put a small Carter 4BBl on it and I don't know how it's set-up internally, float height, jets etc. Could pinging be the result of mix or starvation?
2) The PO also had the timing all messed up. I set it by vacuum to get the best start and acceleration and I'm wondering if I have it a tad too far advanced.
Thanks in advance.

Either or. could be either one. Lean conditions cause spark knock. High timing causes spark knock. Carbon in the cylinders causes spark knock. If you set the timing by vacuum and not with a light then thats where your problem most likely is located. Try setting with a light or lowering the timing 2 degrees at the time until the spark knock goes away and see how far you have to go.
