Newbie Questions

Just purchased a used 2002 F350 7.3, SRW ext cab. I had noticed it had an upgrade exhuast (Dynomax), but wasn't sure of anything else. After two other diesel drivers drove the truck, they both asked if I had a chip in it. So, I am under the assumption that I do.

I have noticed that I need to purchase gauges; main three being pyro, boost and tranny. Can anyone explain what I would be looking for on these gauges? Like my boost, I understand I don't want to ruin my turbo, but what is this gauge telling me and how high/how long should I keep it under? I was also wondering what is the difference between 30 and 60 PSI?

I also need to know the same things about tranny and pyro gauges.

Any help is appreciated.

Welcome to the best forum in the universe! The upgraded exhaust is good. It allows the heat to escape the engine quicker. This is very good if you do have a chip. You will have to visually look at your PCM to see if you do have a chip or not. It may or may not stick through the cover of the PCM. You could also have had a tuner installed at one time. A tuner basically takes the program out of your computer and puts a different one in. If that's the case you will have to keep the program that's in it until you can get someone on this forum who is experienced with tuners to tell you what your options are.
Your turbo is limited to about 24? lbs of boost or so. The PCM will shut off the fuel when the boost gets too high. The boost gauge is good for a reference but IMO it is the least necessary. The Pyro is the one gauge that is absolutely essential if you are pushing more power. The pyro can be mounted before or after the turbo. I would recommend the pre turbo installation because it shows a quicker response to change and gives you a better indication of what is leaving the cylinder and going in to the turbo. General consensus is to keep the EGT under 1250 degrees. If you choose to use a post turbo pyro you will see readings about 300 degrees lower than the pre-turbo installation. Either way is better than none.
Tranny temp is needed mainly if you tow frequently. Your 7.3 can make enough power to shred a tranny if the mods are done to the motor. Even if you don't tow it's good to know what's going on. good luck with it.
