Hey guys, my 77 f250 (460), 1. sometimes floods 2. is hard to start 3. has severe backfiring 4. and has poor acceleration sometimes, I am no mechanic but I would say these are Carb Problems, what are your guys' opinions and if it is how hard is it to rebuild one??? thanks for any help
Check your ignition timing. If it is off more than a degree or two the timing chain may have slipped. This is a common problem with the 460 with 80-120K miles. You will need to follow the timing chain diagnosis in your service manual.
It could also be fuel delivery problems or a bad carb.
Get a service manual at the parts store. It is the first thing you need to work on your truck. It has pictures and detailed instructions we really can't duplicate here.
Alright, thanks for your help guys I think my grandpa still has his Haynes manual for the truck, i'll check into it, would it hurt to just rebuild the carb and see if that helps??
Don't just focus on one area for solving this problem if it hasn't had a tune up in a while. Take a good look at the condition of the entire ignition system and fuel delivery using a repair manual for steps to go by.As was already mentioned, the timing chain is suspected to be the cause, but don't stop there.
Since you mentioned you aren't a mechanic then you'll be needing to get some things like a timing light and spark plug gapping and measuring tools. Some other very inportant tools that I get plenty of use out of are a vacuum gauge, vacuum pump and a compression gauge. These are as important as having wrenches to me in order to maintain an engine in good running condition. When you start reading the repair manual you will find these tools on a list in it.
If you do it right, then probably not.
Get one of those gal cans of carb cleaner from napa(its about $18, but it is worth it). Don't get the cheap spray can stuff. Shake it alittle first to mix it. Don't put the cleaner in anything plastic or get it on you. Don't bother useing rubber gloves(it eats them for a snack like it does you, paint, and grease).
Let the carb soak till clean, swirl it around in the cleaner a little.
Try not to breath it.
Use water to wash it off.
