Need some trany Advice
3 speed with overdrive trany, and 3:54 dana 44 limited slip rear.
I want to go to a automatic, as im realy getting tired of shifting all the time. and I use the truck as a daily driver. I have both city and highway driving every day. I would like to upgrade to 4 bl and manifold and headers in the future as well as air cond.
in 3rd gear 1 to 1 on the hw I turn around 2,600 at 65 mph with the overdrive i run around 2100 at 65mph quit a differance.
If I go to a C6 I get reliabilaty and ease of setup but I would need to go way down in rear gears maby a 3.08 to get any kind of milage at all, maby with a wide ratio C6 ?
AOD or 700R4, would require adaptor and a lot of modification, and would need to be built to take the 352 tq. Expencive and uncharted waters for me.
Gear venders, To much money, would cost more than a built AOD and adaptor.
So im thinking the C6 wide ration with a set of 3:08 gears, would this let me get at least some of the highway milage im getting now and still allow for some light towing ( small bassboat ) a few time a year ?
Thanks in advance for any suggetions.
Art Carr (artcarr.com) has a $550 adaptor that converts the "Y" bell housing pattern to a "standard" GM pattern, opening you up to many other transmission options old and new, in case you're interested.
If you want to stick with Ford, part number #56FE2 from ford-aod.com for $800 can allow you to attach a 700R4 transmission to your 352... the kit is complete, includes adapters, flexplate, crank snout adaptor, starter, and all bolts. For $700 they have a similar kit that installs an AOD on an FE....
The gear venders unit is a good piece... I bought one used for my crewcab, and supposively they are unbreakable. I guess we'll find out.
If your boat isn't too heavy, you can tow with 3.08 gears...
