Mig Welder Settings ?

I know each welder is different and I know I should practice on a piece of scrap metal of similar thickness to my project, but is there a "general" formula or ratio for the heat settings and wire speeds on mig welders ?

Many welders have a chart to get you started inside the access door. If you are working with a more industrial unit, it won' have this.
