My F-250 is over heating after driving for a while. Its got part anti-freeze and part water (mostly water). The rad is full the overflow is half full and I was just wondering if anyone knew what may be causing it. The heater gauge in the dash doesnt say that im overheating either, but when I park the engine starts to puff pretty badly. Just so you know I have bypassed my heater core cause it has a crack in it so ive got one hose that goes to the heater core out completely and the other one just goes back into the rad. I was wondering if that may cause a problem, so if anyone has bypassed their heater core and knows what the heck is going on let me know. Thank you fellow Ford lovers.
I'm confused, How do you have one hose going back to the rad? You should just have the one hose looped to where you took the other one off the engine. (So that both ends are connected to the engine) I would have used a u-pipe to keep the order right for when I replaced the heater-core, but this should not cause a problem anyways.
Take a look inder the oil fill cap and see if you have any whitish residue. This unfortunately indicates a blown head gasket. It will affect idle operation and the white smoke/puffing issue is also an indicator. If you have by-passed the heater core as Popa Tim advises you should use a u-pipe creating a loop. What temp thermostat, when is the last timeit was changed, might be stat. I'd start there if you find no residue under the oil filler cap.
I used one of the hoses to go back into the engine not the rad, sorry.
I just checked and I cant find any white residue anywhere on or near the oil fill cap or underneather the truck.
Yes, the rad cap is on and secure.
I bought the truck fairly recently so im not sure when the thermostat was last changed, but im going to get my oil changed in the next few days so im going to get the rad flushed and filled with anti-freeze alone and no water this time. Thanks a lot for your help guys.
Pure antifreeze is not good either. You want a 50/50 to 70/30 mix of antifreeze/water.
Grab a prestone flushnfill kit ($2-4) and splice it into your heaterhose. Flush and refill as directed. Since water will still be in the block, refill with pure antifreeze and you'll be in the right range I hope. I'm not sure how much you'll be off due to the lack of the heater core. In my 5.0 I ended up at 70/30 (lucky me) I think my book says the system holds 13 quarts and it took me 9 quarts pure to fill the system, which means I had 4 quarts of water still in the block.
Straight antifreeze and you'll overheat in a minute or less. Like Popa Tim (the Man!) advises, get one of those Prestone flush'n'fill kits and do it yourself for 3.98 plus the cost of antifreeze. I run 50/50 to 40/60 anti-freeze to water, but all I have to protect to generally is 25° to 28°, I am more concerned with the roadway temperature of 120° from late May to October. I also use a coolant enhancer, have for the last 10 years as I haul a lot and work the truck in high heat. 246,500+ and still goin' strong!
Yeah mine is used for work and I haul loads of garbage a lot and thats when I first noticed the over heating was when I had finished a day of a fair amount of driving with heavy loads and it was a hot one as well at a high of 15ºC not sure what that is in F, but it was pretty warm. Im going to be taking it into the shop as well because ive got some other stuff that needs looking at (as I said I recently bought the truck so im gonna ask my guy to check it all over for me), but thank you guys for your help.
