I'm in tears again. I have yet another stering pump leaking on my 78 4x4. It's leaking out the end shaft like all the others. This pump made it about 4000 miles. I am wondering if my problems are because the pump sits so close to the headers. Once again I'm looking for someone that has a good idea. I have gone thru about 8 pumps in two years and I'm getting really tired.
Is the belt aligned properly? A misaligned or overly tight belt can destroy the front bearing which wears the seal and presto leako...
I would suspect one of the above since you have gone thru so many pumps, all failing in the same manner. Probably not the pump's fault.
Make a heat shield out of some tin.
Do you have a return line filter? Any time you replace a PS system component, even a hose, install a return line filter. After so many failures your PS system is probably full of abrasive wear particles and needs to be flushed very well with clean fluid.
Wix transmission/PS filter
===================
Wix transmission/PS filter #58964
Ford equivalent filter kit #XC3Z-7B155-AA
Ford filter alone #XC3P-7B155-BA
200 psi working, pressure relieved, magnetic
change yearly or 12000 miles
The lines, steering box, filter and the filter have been changed. The belt and pully alignment are correct. I have this "too close to my headers" thing stuck in my mind and maybe a heat shied is a good step. One thing is for sure.....I'm really getting tired of it.
The header heat should not cause the front seal to leak as a first sign of trouble. It will cause the fluid to oxidize which usually causes problems elsewhere in the system. Check your belt tension and make sure it is to spec in your service manual.
Are you running the WIX filter or some tiny slip inside the line thing?
Many people run headers without PS pump problems. Remember the PS pump is directly in line with the air coming off the fan which helps keep it cool. If you are worried about heat some Fords came with a small radiator on the PS return line.
