I have a 97 f-150 4.6 with a auto trans and the last two days it has started stalling when I come to a stop first is was just a little like the convertor wasnt unlocking it would bring the rpms down to about 800 then be fine now it just stalls all the time just like if you had a 5 speed and didn't push in the clutch can and also its seems to just be in first gear but I did notice that it kinda holds in 2nd kinda long on the down shift other then that the truck drives good it goes into OD fine and back out if it needs but it has 87k and just had its 2nd tranny flush at 68k so it about time for another but I don't think a flush will fix this prob can anyone help
Without a code it's guesswork. Could be low fuel pressure (dirty fuel filter), dirty air filter, dirty MAF, dirty injectors, bad cops, plug gap too big (worn out), I don't think it's the tranny but? Do the filters, the MAF and injector cleaner then drive it a while. Still dying, get a professional diagnostic cause cops are expensive and plugs on a 97 are scary. Good Luck
ok well to add its a 97 so no COPS and I just did the plugs made a big diff but I haven't got the fuel filter yet and here is an up date if I stop fast then it dies and if I stop slow it will lug a lil but then recover but its doing it when it down shifts cause you can feel it come out of 2nd and then it doesn't want to come out of first and also when I stop and put it in neutral and go to put it back in drive it will die as soon it put in gear so I don't know
blue97flare, I'm seeing the same thing happen with my '99 with the 4.6. It just started happening recently and seems to mainly happen if I have been driving a constant speed for at least 10 minutes. Almost always happens now when I first stop from coming off an interstate or highway. Where you able to find and fix the problem? What was the cause?
Your lock-up converter is not unlocking, causing the engine to stall. I had the same thing happen to me. I would come to a stop, and it felt like I had a stick shift trans, and didn't push in the clutch. If the torque converter does not unlock, you will stall. My problem turned out to be a lock-up solenoid.
