Has anyone used the new beehive springs from compcams? my roller cam (crane) 400 doesn't have the triple springs recomended due to installed height concerns. Would have had to fly cut the springs pockets too deep for safety.
I have not used them myself, but I have read many articles about CompCams beehive springs. Their supperior single spring shape lets you run higher seat pressure and produces greater valve control. On one test, a 700 horsepower 454 chevy saw a gain of 20 hp. In fact, in the May issue of Car Craft, a 500 horsepower 302 was switched to the springs after breaking double valve spring @ 7000 rpm. From what I have read, I would recommend the valve springs, especially for a roller application. You might want to wait and see what someone who has used them says as far as precautions go.
I just installed a set of the Crane beehive springs on my GT40p heads. No machine work was needed to the spring pockets as they are the same diameter as the stock springs at the base, but they are smaller at the top so matched retainers and locks are required. With a .530 lift roller cam I have plenty of space between the coils, so there are no coil bind concerns. Looks good so far... -TD
