Can anybody tell me what the powertrain control module(PCM) and what the Electonic Engine control(EEC) do? do these parts fail often? could the failure of these units lead to a condition of no spark and no fuel? I miss the old days when none of this crap existed.
thanks in advance.

The ecm is the processor which control both the engine functions and the electonic trans functions. This unit if bad could cause not spark or fuel, the moduel is on the distributor, and if bad would cause a no spark, but you would still have fuel.

Check your fuseable links before you replace the processor, or have it checked out, expensive part if you are not sure.

Dave,
Thank you for taking the time to respond. unfortuantly the module that your talking about is not my problem. By the way mine is mounted on the inside fender on the drivers side, not on the distributor. is this because it is a manual trans or what. but I beleive what I am talking about is the brain s of the truck, but i dont know I am just reading a Chiltons manual and trying to check up on what they are saying. thanx for your time

The EEC & PCM are essentially the same thing. Ford uses the EEC-IV as the PCM in the F150s from 1985 - 95-96. The PCM is also used in controlling Ford's electronic automatic overdrive tranny. Before you go out and get the PCM checked, have you tested the ignition coil? As for your fuel problem, you should be able to hear the fuel pump "whirring" for a second when you turn the key to on. (before crnaking). Maybe if you had more details of the truck and what work has been done to it lately.

Thank you everybody for taking the time and repling. the truck is a 1992 f-150 4.9l manual transmission(5 speed w/od).I have replaced so far the plugs, wires, cap, rotor, spark control modual(a piece of plastic mounted on the inside fender on the drivers side, usally mounted on the distributer)?????? I have also replaced the coil and the distributer. when the problem first started I was able to take one of the spark plugs out, ground it , and turn the engine over. this would start the motor. I replaced the motor at 170,000 miles with a remanufactuered motor about a year and 10,000 miles ago. I do not know where to go from here, any help is much needed.

Here is what I would do. Find the Diagnostic Link Connector (DLC) on your truck. On a 92 model it should be towards the back of the drivers side rear fender near the firewall. Remove theconnector and looking straight on at the sockets of it with the longer of the 2 flat sides facing down, the socket all the way to the left is the Fuel pump test port. Ground this socket to the negative post of the battery and with the key in run you should here the fuel pumps run. What this does is take control of the fuel pump away from the EEC-IV system. If it doesn't work that way let me know and I will try to help you from there. Just out of curiosity did you unplug the battery to clear the computer? I had the fuel pumps quit on my 90 F150. pulled the negative battery terminal left it off for a few minutes and put it back on. fixed it. As for the spark I am thinking about that now.
