i don't remember the model # off the carb i have on my 292 but the tech guys at holley told me it's a 220 cfm carb. does this sound right? what would be a good carb to put on my motor. i would think a 500 cfm would be a little more along the lines of what i should have.
The You may want to browse the Holley Performance web page, some good information. There is a ' Carburator Selection Guide' based on engine size, May find it helpful. They also have a formula one can use to determine correct carburation. www.holley.com There is also an article in the "classic Trucks Magazine' titled "carb confusion" you may find helpful. Little techie but informative. If you go to their web page under 'technical articles' believe page 3 you will find the article. www.classictrucks.com 500 cfm may be bit more than you need for the 292, perhaps more knowledgeable member can advise.

Have a 302 with 500cfm Holley 4bbl. Beefed up the engine a bit, rarely get into secondary. Prior to engine rebuild believe it was a 300-350cfm Holley 2bbl and had all the power needed. Not that knowledgeable about engine to carburation selection. May want to run search, and or post question under carburation, or 292 engine forum.

a basic rule of thumb would be 1.5 x cid for what carb to use for a street motor. Getting a little more complicated, cid x max rpm divided by 3456 = cfm (figuring your motor runs about 85% volumetric efficiency)
you would come up with 438 or 422 (figuring 5000 rpm as your max). a 600 cfm would give about a 7100 rpm max using that equation. But that figures a perfect condition, so results might vary.
