I dunno', just a weird thought.....
Ok, entertain me here, ok?

Let's say you rig up a pzieo <sp?> igniter at the tailpipe, flip the chip and start blowing a big black cloud of unburned diesel, then.....

You click the igniter!

Would ya think we might cook a plastic car or just have an airborne napalm burst?
Just a weird thought....

Oh geez, I sooo much wanna' smoke someone. Since I put the NAPA 6637 on, I don't get nearly as much smoke.

good concept.... wonder if a pzieo <SP?>igniter would get it hot enough..... you may need something hotter that that to ignite the unburned diesel..... if someone could rig up a mapp gas or O2 tourch setup that could get it REAL hot then it may ignite....maby a lit magnesium ribbon!! (hard to find around here) got me thinking....

Johnny, i got the 3-4'' DP from Dale at Tymar, then ran 4'' all the way back to the bed where i just cut hole big enough to fit with the grinder/cutting blade. ran a 4'' 90* up through the bed. mated that to a Y-Splitter i got from Berubes truck supply (thanks cat_man), and split off that into another 90* at each side and up into a 4-5'' reducer, then i think 26'' of chrome. here's a few pics. http://community.webshots.com/album/313897774fTXKdQ i don't thinki have any under the truck yet....just somethin for me to do another day? i plan on hitting all the piping with some black hi-heat engine paint to prevent rust and make it look good.

Robb,
Magnesium is easy to get.
The old Volkswaken blocks are made from it.
I really don't think the air/fuel mixture is right to light off a black cloud.
Perhaps someone will find out, who knows....

we could try it. just get ahold of a propane bottle torch or oxy/acetalene torch and light 'er up, hold it up the exhaust and give it some gas. at least little bit of smoke will come out and maybe ignite. its a start, but i too think that something in the air mix would make it VERY difficult...almost too good to be true kind of thing....maybe if the planets were all aligned and we collectivly as a forum stood on one foot? make sure its the left foot.

But doesn't it need to be under a load to toss the smoke?
Aw heck, just put a torch in the pipe and cook a plastic car....
I can barely get a puff out now, the NAPA 6337 filter seems to be cleaning it up.

Several years (actually more than several) I had a 1949 chev (blush) straight six with split (dual) exhaust. I had a spark plug in each exhaust pipe about 6" from the end. The plugs were wired to a model T coil. I could shoot flames 10 feet out the back by putting the tranny in 2nd gear pull out the choke and turn the key off and coast about 100 feet or so then fire off the model T coil.

Hmmm, food for thought...
Especially with the newer coils putting out 10k volts, that ought to light something up.
For sure, we wouldn't want to load up the pipe with propane and set it off, sort's might destroy something we don't want to.

I still like the napalm cloud thing....
I could have use that against the soccer mom in the mini van.

I can see this working on exhaust that has excess, highly volatile unburnt fuel, but correct me if I am wrong, diesel doesn't ignite/burn the same as gasoline and/or propane, so trying to light up any unburnt diesel in the exhaust would be rather diffcult . . . no?

Diesel vapor will go boom or burn. When your off the throttle you control fuel in a diesel. All fuel will go thru the motor and ignite by compression, this is your power. You would have to add an injector after the muffler to get vapors plus an ignition source for flame thrower.

Did anyone see the Trucks episode ( 6 months ago) where Stacy was at Wyotech and they had a diesel injector hooked up to a pump (looked like a grease gun) with a propane torch for ignition? Each time they pumped they made a flame 2' in diameter by 5' long, approximate as this was on tv. Looked cool.

Some how, I dont know how yet, the tractor pullers can ignite the black cloud of unburned diesel, right at the tip of the exhasut pipe. Now most of them are running multiple turbo's, surely 2, I have seen a few that are rumored to have 4. they have water injection, and are seeing EGT's well past the 2000* mark, everything in the engine is ceramic coated, and there spinning a 2K RPM motor to 4-5K RPM. I think they can do it because of a few things LOTS of fuel+4K RPM+water injection+plus 100+ PSI of boost. and the exahust is only a foot long.

I think on the trucks, we can enough fuel through them, and the long exhuast really sucks up th heat, my side pipes would only get to 250* with my portable pyrometer on them, while the post turbo would be 600*.

I will try and rig up an LP set up, not right away, be a few weeks or more. with a sparkplug in the bottom of the pipes, my only real concern is that the plug will soot up and not spark.

I figure I am a fireman, if I set it on fire I can atleast put it out.

one buddy is a welder and knows a few things about torches, and another one is a heating and air guy, knows a lil about LP, so I think we can figure it out.
