Hello all,
Please accept me into the BSEG club as I have purchased my first v10 powered Ford(05' 250 4x4 cc sb ts dark stone 4.10 ls). Everything I know about this engine I have learned from FTE. Never really considered buying a v10 until owning a 6.0. Man was that thing fast!(lots of money spent on performance) Just wished people would quit asking how many times it was in the shop, it never was. But from what I have learned I made the better choice. Really enjoy the v10, I'v got a Kenny Bernstein foot and this thing loves to burn rubber. PS The price of gas is not as bad as driving a loaner.
FireInspector . Welcome to this site and congratulations on your new 05 V10. I know you are going to keep liking that V10 more and more. Do you find yourself waiting for the little squiggle to go out before you crank her on. Are you amazed how fast she warms up and do you get that feeling the motor has quit when you pull up to a red light. Then you check your tach, rock solid on 700 RPM and you tickle your throttle and you get a big heavy truck that feels like its very light. BSEG indeed and like that V10 posting guru Fred likes to say, 10 burning and 4 turning. Good luck with your new pickup and I hope it is everything you had wanted it to be. Wrench.
Just curious, if the 6.0 was never in the shop why did you switch to V10. I have one on order and am having some second thoughts about not getting the PSD. I have been watching the why a 10 is better then a PSD thread and am a little bummed that in 4 years a PSD will be worth 7 grand more. I am pretty sure with what I need the truck for I made the right choice I just have too much time on my handes to second vuess myself while I wait for it to get here.
I was not able to compare used prices since most of the used 250s had the PSD and a few 5.4s.
Unless i personally knew the owner of a truck that had a PSD and he owned it from the begining i find it harder and harder to be willing to spend 7k more on a used PSD after listening to all the problems that could occur with it. Lets face it any diesel to have worked on isn't cheap.

Remember:
That comparison was done with the very well regarded 7.3l, and the old 275hp 2V V10...
Also, that was wholesale price, difference in retail is less than that.
Its just that demand for the old 7.3l has exceded supply, and dealers are willing to pay big $$$ to keep people coming through the door.
These people are generally Ford fans who may have heard a story or 2 about the 6.0l to keep them away, but they still want a Ford.
I doubt the resale on the 6.0l will be quite as strong as the 7.3l, and I imagine that the resale of "The Beast" (a.k.a the 3V V10) will be much greater than that of the older 2V version.

Bagger, I really don't see a 6.0 PSD selling for 7000 more than a V10 in 4 years. If it is true that a replacement diesel is coming out in 07 , the very short and problamatic life of the 6.0 PSD will do nothing to enhance the resale of this disapointing motor. Go read the diesel forums, thousands of 6.0 owners are drooling about the 07. There will be so many of the lemon sixes on the market a good V10 will fetch a better buck. I am seeing lots of 03 and 04 SD PSds for sale right now and they are not flying off the lots by any means. You ordered a V10, you saved a bunch of cash and you are going to have a better truck down the road. I feel certain about this and don't let the diesel boys get to you, they are always trying to justify a diesel purchase. A guy I knew owned a ready mix plant with all diesel cement trucks. He always drove a new Chev gasser and when I went in with my Ford PSDs to get a load of gravel, he would say ," you guys have to be nuts to own a diesel in a pickup, I pay for repairs on my Mixers and I wouldn't own a diesel in a pickup for all the tea in China" Just an example of all the opinions out in our crazy world. Good Luck and take care, Wrench.
Wrench, the person who quoted the $7000 figure was polarbear - who I am sure you are aware works at a Ford dealership (and he drives an F150 BTW).
But as you and I both mentioned, that figure is not representative of the potential resale value of the 3V vs the 6.0l.
BigF350 thanks for the note and It doesn't bother me a bit to disagree with people who work for Ford, I do it on a regular basis. Where I live on Vancouver Island, the 7.3 PSD has a very solid reputation and it is hard to find a clean 7.3 for sale. They sell fast. I only know a handful of 6.0 owners and half that group has had problems. mine was 7 days in the shop. A guy I work with was 11 days in the shop. You guys in OZ are real lucky if you can get an 05 with a 7.3.
Ours are effectively 02's, they just haven't changed it, but we still get Forged rods on our 7.3l. YAY!!!
Our market is whole lot different than your guys though...
The market leader in the segement (Toyota Landruiser) have done pretty much nothing to change their vehicle over the past 20years, except slap a turbo on it.
Not many people here care for change in their work vehicles, they just care that they will run for 500000 miles, doesn't matter if it doesn't have all the bells and whistles, thats just more things to go wrong...
An Australian friend of mine spends half his time back in Oz showed me some picture of this heavy duty tent trailer that can follow a 4X4 anywhere. My friend and his wife bought one of these and a Toyota and cruised the unbeaten trails of your facinating country. He had a bunch of neat pictures to show me and as I have told you before I spent 6 months in Sydney and loved it. That was 1969 and I still remember 2 big cops driving around in blue Mini police cars. Hilarious. I hope they have something a little more roomy now. Lots of work in Sydney town in those days, Most factories were hiring at the gate and I became an Iron worker at the Resches Brewery at Railway Square. 2000 employees , mostly drunks like me and I had 4 months of never really being sober. I remember an Irishman coming up to me and saying get out of here while you can ,mate, don't become what I have. He was around 30 years of age and a complete burnout. I realized he was right and I got out of there but man we had a lot of fun at work. I am sure things have changed and I hear the breweries in Canada were just as bad in those days. Take care, Wrench.
Bagger, I really hated to part with my 6.0, but my brother has one also and has had many issues(oil leaks, surging, trany leaks and the best one taking off without any throttle input). I never had as much as a rattle in mine but part of my decision was with the performance items I installed. With that much power it would definately have broken sooner or later. Not to mention the self contained problems these motors are known for.
Yes the sick litre has some dandy flaws doesn't it. A poorly machined bed plate that tries to hold oil in with a spagetti gasket, a three hour shop charge to change a serpentine belt, a real jim dandy fuel filter that requires you to lie under your truck but oh wow they have that top mount pop up filter with 40 dollar paper element cartridges. Fire inspector , I truly believe it is not IF you have trouble with a 6.0 but more like WHEN you have trouble. You made a good move and right now you can still get rid of a used 6.0. As more people become aware of this motor's shortcomings, I believe the worm will turn . The better the 07 Diesel turns out to be the more used 6.0s will be tuning up and I would love to see that 07 to be the best diesel available in a pickup. I want Ford SDs to stay on top and now that they have the best Gas engine in the class it would be great if they could bring out the best diesel. Take care, Wrench
I tend to buy vehicles new and drive them to the junk yard - hopefully taking 15 years and 200,000 miles or so for the trip. I've noted a number of references such as Big350 to expectations that these trucks should make two, three or even five hundred thousand miles if treated responsibly, and this raises a question.
I currently have two dodge caravans for which the engines are holding up just fine, one at 126K and the other at 162K, except that the brake and fuel lines are seriously rusted, presumably from all the road salt we have in Minnesota on winter roads.
We're not talking stainless steel lines with Super Duties are we? If you live somewhere with salt water in the air or on the roads, what do you have to do to make a truck body and chassis last 25 years? Move to Arizona?

Uh, yeah...
My '01 is holding up to some serious salting this past winter while my Rancho shocks are rusting right through the paint...
Brake lines are galvanized I think... if you want stainless, you'll have to upgrade
