This is on my 85 F-250 with a 460/C6. I recently replaced the modulator with an adjustable one, and I also had the axle gears changed from 3:55 to 4:10. Now it feels like my tranny is shifting to soon. I goes to 2nd at about 20mph and 3rd at about 30mph. it may wait until 35-40 to go into 3rd if I floor it. I was also wondering if this could be contributing to my tranny heat problem, it feels like it is lugging along in 3rd gear (when towing) at low speeds, latley I have been keeping it in 2nd when towing around town 40mph or less. Even at high speeds, if I get to a hill, my tranny temp will go from 190*to 210*+ I have an electric fan to put on my aux. cooler, for the low speeds. The tranny has 111,000 miles, I had the filter and fluid changed at 109,000. Which way would I turn the modulator screw to increase the time between shifts?
I got slightly larger tires as well, 285/75R16, and I went and followed my sisters 2004 pontiac around at different speeds, and the speedo seems to be dead on. It worries me cuz if I travel uphill at 35mph in 3rd gear, the tranny temp starts climbing, if I travel the same hill at 35mph in 2nd gear, it wont get nearly as hot.
I have an external cooler, it's about 10"x20", cooling system is up to par, no problems there. I have an electric fan to put on the cooler, just haven't done it yet, have to remove pushbar to remove grill to get to it. If the tranny is gonna overheat at speed on the light hills around town, it will never pull my camper to the mountains, and it's a small camper too, 12-13'.
