I have Dual tanks on my 85 and the rear was leaking and caused me to fail my mechanical safety since then I have bought a donar truck (another 85 ) with the same tank configuration was just wondering if its a good idea to paint the tanks before i swop them over and if so would Rust paint be good enough ? or should i just go with undercoating
I guess it all depends on what part of the country you live in. I would just use Rustoleum or another type of rust inhibitor paint. If you live in the "rust belt", then I'd try P.O.R 15. If you live in the Southwest, undercoating would look funky and it might trap heat inside the tank causing your fuel to vaporize in extreme heat.
I painted my tank when I replaced it. The previous owner had already replaced one tank with a plastic one so hopefully that will outlast the truck. The paint looks pretty nice in my opinion, I went flat black with a regular spray enamel. Make sure you use something to cushion the straps, the factory straps have rubber or something on them and the aftermarket straps do not. I used a bicycle innertube in it's place and it looks quite stock. You may think about water getting under any paint scratches (hard to keep from doing this when installing it) and still rusting but I just did it for looks and the need to get rid of leftover spray paint.
por 15 is overrated. It's isocynate formula is rough on the lungs, and impossible to get off the hands brushes, paint gun, ect. without their special thinner. If you want rust protection go to eastwood company and get their product called rust encapsulator. used to be called Coreless. It comes in black, red and silver to match the fuel tank. also cleans up with plain old lacquer thinner. good-luck
