'88 F150, striaght 6, manual 5 speed. This truck has 3 indicator lights; check engine, engine, battery. At low rpm, the engine light comes on. It's the kind of thing I'd expect from the battery light, if the alternator was weak. Any ideas? Oil pressure guage seems stable.
That "engine" light is probably a low oil pressure waring lamp.
If the pressure switch senses low pressure, it turns on that light.
One thing to consider: Is your oil pressure guage a true guage or is it a "mechanical idiot light" type.
Most Fords starting somewhere around the mid to late 80s went to the mechanical idiot type where in the guage either indicated half-scale or nothing. It was hard-wired to the pressure switch.
A true pressure guage has its own sender unit and actually measures the oil pressure. Readings will vary based on oil thickness, temperature, etc.
If you have a true pressure guage and it is indicating good pressure, I'd suspect the pressure switch.
black electrical tape will fix that problem.
I hear Auto Zone is offering "free" engine light checks...i haven't tried it even though my engine light has been on for 4 years on my subaru.
yes, Auto Zone does offer that service. They tell you what the code says and will sell you the parts, if they have them. It's a great service, but not applicable to my problem, since it's not the 'check engine' light that is coming on.
You have got me on this one. Does anyone know for sure what the "engine" light is for? Maybe someone that has a owners manual can look it up if their truck has the 2 engine lights.
