I am swapping cams in my 302 and am thinking about switching to a high volume oil pump, but i was looking in Jegs and they have a high pressure and a high volume. Aren't these be basically the same thing? How can you avoid having high volume with high pressure? Should I get a high volume or a high pressure oil pump?
There are high volume standard pressure pumps, there are high volume high pressure pumps, and there are standard volume high pressure pumps.
I use high volume standard pressure. A high volume high pressure pump can blow oil filters. I like the filter, but The Motorcraft FL1-a filters blow like clockwork on h.v.-h.p. pumps. You have to use a race filter for most of those pumps. I have seen street engines with 110 lbs pressure, but there is no need whatsoever for that type pressure. I usually use 60 lb springs. There is also really no point for a high pressure pump on a street engine. Just keep in mind, that at high rpm, 7000+, a high volume pump can pump a stock oil pan dry. The pump I have had the best luck with is the Melling.
(Okay, let's try this again...) I too use the HV pumps. Just be aware that they put more load on the oil pump driveshaft, so it's a good idea to replace it with a high-strength aftermarket shaft, should only set you back 15-17 bucks. I have seen stock shafts twist into a spiral over their entire length before shearing off at one end. Not fun. -TD
